Like all CASA
programs
across the nation, there are never enough volunteers to meet the
community's needs. Here in Josephine County we can provide CASAs
for fewer than half the cases that would benefit from our
presence. As such, when you're introduced to a case you might be
interested in taking, you'll know there's a real need, and that you'll
have what it takes to make a very real difference in the lives of
children and their families. Remember, we see only the most
complex and urgent of situations where children must be removed from
their homes for their own safety.
Of course you'll start off with just a single case, but once you get
some experience and gain confidence in your role and abilities, you'll
undoubtedly be looking for more opportunities. You'll
find that your cases go through a range of activity levels ranging from
simple monitoring with a few phone calls and a visit or two in a month
to working intensely to try to resolve with a social worker a crisis
that has arisen. Your
personal life may make it possible to take on more than one case at a
time as many CASAs do, but that's not a requirement. You may want
to take a period of time between cases, and that's
fine! And if family or vacation opportunities
conflict with a particular requirement for your presence, we can find a
way to pass along your input or gather information for you while you're
away. A
good CASA is a horrible thing to lose, so we'll do everything we can to
keep you from burning out or losing perspective on the rest of your
life!
One thing you will get a good deal of satisfaction from is your
association with other CASAs, whether with one or two individuals you
get to know or through occasional get-togethers as a group. You
won't be burdened by obligations to attend lots of meetings, although
from time to time additional short training sessions are scheduled to
enhance your cabilities and understanding. You'll look forward to
these opportunities because they always provide new insights that make
your efforts more productive and satisfying.
